In 2009 we had a great holiday in the Caribbean. We stayed in St. Martin: a very interesting island. Although it’s only 87 square kilometers it’s half Dutch and half French. The airport is in the Dutch part and the cruise ships also dock here. If you like to party it seems the Dutch part is for you. Preferring a more sedate life we stayed in the French part with it’s lovely restaurants right on the water. Our hotel was in Anse Marcel. The road winds up over a steep hill (intimidating to my wife as she was driving at the time). You eventually get to a bay with just two (at least at that time there were only two) hotels. Quite secluded. We also visited Anguilla (by catamaran) and St. Barth’s (by motor boat from Marigot so we didn’t have to risk the scary short runway right into the sea that you have to use if you come by air).
