The stone monument in the foreground is a memorial to Gurdon Saltonstall Osborn who died at the age of nine months and is buried in the churchyard of St. Philips in the Highlands – one of my favorite churches. His father Henry Fairfield Osborn was a scion of the wealthy Osborn family who built Castle Rock (See: Dracula on Hudson), a beautiful house perched high on a hill overlooking Garrison. There are some that believe Osborn was the inspiration for “The Wizard of Oz (OSborn – OZ – get it?) as the author of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz“, L Frank Baum once attended nearby “Peekskill Military Academy“.
