Emil Zola was a photographer?!

I’m familiar with the famous (after his death in 1902 as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by an improperly ventilated chimney thousands attended his funeral) author Emil Zola. I recall reading “Germinal” and was aware of the Dreyfus scandal and “J’Accuse”.  But until today I had not realized that he was something of a photographer too. And this is the early days of photography. Some photos below (more on flickr).  There’s also a book of his photographs: “Zola, Photographer” by  Francois Emile-Zola (Zola’s grandson) and Massin.

An interesting two part interview with Henri Cartier-Bresson:

The journalist and filmmaker Sheila Turner-Seed interviewed Henri Cartier-Bresson in his Paris studio in 1971 for a film-strip series on photographers that she produced for Scholastic. After her death in 1979 at the age of 42, that interview, along with interviews that Ms. Turner-Seed had conducted with Bruce Davidson, Cornell Capa, Lisette Model, W. Eugene Smith, Don McCullin and others, sat like a time capsule in the archives of the International Center of Photography in New York.

Thames & Hudson’s Photofile series. I have a couple of these and can recommend them:

Thames & Hudson’s Photofile series – a sort of Reader’s Digest of coffee table books – offers well-produced paperbacks containing approximately 60 decent reproductions. Rather than review one at a time, I’ll review the series, as most are worthwhile, and the concept of these affordable and small packages is fantastic.

Quality photo books generally are priced too high for students (or anyone on a budget) to purchase with abandon. Additionally, they can be cumbersome and better suited to adorn a coffee table than to actually thumb through. Thus the Photofile series addresses an important gap in the marketplace. These portable and reasonably priced ‘mini-monographs’, allow readers to enjoy well-reproduced photos without breaking the back or the bank. They are to large art books what a high quality point and shoot is to the professional DSLR. Let’s go through some of their strong points….

Ever wanted to make your own camera. Now’s your chance with the Lomography Konstruktor (from Petapixel).

You may have seen built-it-yourself 35mm pinhole cameras before, but have you ever seen a DIY SLR? Lomography today announced the Konstruktor, a camera it calls “the world’s first 35mm do-it-yourself” SLR camera. Now you too can make blurry, over-saturated, grainy, cross-processed, light polluted pictures with your very own home built camera. Sounds like I hate lomo cameras :-). Actually I don’t – even if I find them typically overpriced. I do like some of the pictures they produce and I admire the way they seem to have introduced an entire new generation to film photography. For $35 I might pick up one myself.

I loved this parable: “Losing your marbles” from Kirk Tuck at the Visual Science Lab.

“One day, as if by magic, a young boy in a very poor village, found a small, perfectly round object only half an inch across that seemed to glow with the most beautiful blue light. He carefully put the round object in his pocket and went home to show his parents. The parents were delighted because, living in a village made of beige mud they’d never seen anything so beautiful. ‘If you can find more of these we could sell them and become rich.’ Said the boy’s father. So the boy decided to go out into the world and find out the secret of the small, perfectly round, beautiful orbs. He put the one he’d found into his pocket, packed a few sandwiches and headed off to search the world for more………

It seems that Kodak is not quite dead yet.

The first fruits of Kodak’s partnership with JK Imaging are starting to emerge. Chinese camera site DCFever has published some photographs of the Kodak S1, a new Micro Four Thirds camera that was announced at the beginning of the year.

The camera never lies. We all know that this has never been true and it’s particularly not true in the Photoshop era. Is this good or bad? My view is that it depends. If the picture purports to present reality (e.g. a news photo) then it should not be manipulated. If not (e.g. if the picture is more artistic in nature) then anything goes. Whatever makes a good image.

We are bombarded with images from television, computer screens, newspapers, and magazines.  There are advertisements, illustrations for news stories, snapshots from social media, and on and on.  From time to time there are news stories expressing outrage about manipulated photographs in advertisements and, heaven forbid, enhanced photos in news stories.  There are rants about “fake” photographs, and prestigious publications such as the New York Times proclaim their purity.  In the nytco web site1 we find, “Images in our pages that purport to depict reality must be genuine in every way.”

Does this make any sense?  Is there such a thing as a fake painting, a fake magazine article, a fake television show?  I think there are fakes, but to me these are things that are meant to deceive, in other words, things that are not what they claim to be.  The problem with photographs is the out-of-date notion that photographs represent reality and have an implied label of nonfiction.

A British Camera

The 22 June 2013 issue of the British magazine Amateur Photographer has the following letter from Melvyn Dover, Dorset:

While out taking pictures recently, I decided that what we need is a British camera. It would need the following spec and features”

  • White balance that goes from ‘very, very cloudy’ to ‘even cloudier’
  • Waterproof to a height of 3m
  • Double-glazed lens
  • Anti-shiver lens stabilization
  • A ‘censor’ mode, in which the camera refuses to take pictures of people, children, airports, military bases, politicians, shopping centres and police
  • To attract British shoppers, it would be labelled ‘cheaper’ and come with a six-week full-quibble guarantee
  • It would be available from out local photographic stores – go round the one-way system three times, leave the queue at the wrongly labelled exit and head for the park and ride
  • Loss of fine art photography tradition

    I’ve recently come across a number of blog/forum posts complaining that new photographers (especially younger photographers) know little about the history and traditions of photography. The following quote is fairly typical:

    What I believe I am seeing is a near total abandonment of photographic tradition and history among new photographers, who of course work digitally (in large part). This concerns me greatly. Without tradition and history, the future is bleak.

    I have a gallery here in west Texas where from time to time, young photographer wannabes come in to show me their work, or at least talk about showing me their work. When I mention ANY historical figure in photography I get a blank stare from them. When I talk about using archivally adequate materials or presentation appropriate to fine art photography… same thing. Even the most obvious basics appear to be missing.

    I also have noticed that on discussion boards they talk at great length about using materials and methods that I, and most here, would consider anathema.

    My concern is this: since new photographers have no need of seeking knowledge concerning analog materials and techniques from older photographers, they are therefore no longer immersed in an atmosphere conducive to acquiring knowledge of other aspects of photography from those same people. They do not learn the history, aesthetics, the various schools or even familiarize themselves with any of the work of the past. It is as if, for these new photographers, all the greats and what they had to teach us have simply vanished from the Earth.

    I am something of a “history buff” so, of course, I’m interested in the history of photography. I collect old cameras. I like to read about famous photographers etc. At times, however, I’m not at all sure that this is necessarily a good thing. While I was still working I participated in a number of workshops that attempted to establish your personality type. I was typed as analytical. This type of personality is rather introspective and likes to continually gather more and more information so as to make better informed decisions. Since you never have all the information you might need this can lead to “paralysis by analysis” where you never make the required decision. In my photography I feel that I don’t get out and take pictures enough and that sometimes I justify this by reading more. Can it be that I’m more interested in “things photographic” than I am in being a photographer. You need to get the balance right between learning from the past and getting out there and doing it in the present.

    Do you really need to have a thorough knowledge of the history of photography and of great photographers in order to be a good photography? I don’t think so. It can certainly help especially if you’re not a truly creative type of person. However, I believe it’s quite possible to produce good, and even great photographs without this knowledge. In any field there are people who have a natural gift, which they then hone through practice. Now I’m certainly not that kind of person. I wish I were – maybe then it wouldn’t be such a hard slog. However, the truly gifted are very few and far between. For the rest of us it’s just keep trying.

    I’m afraid that quotes such as the above show an inability to accept that there might be other ways than the “tried and true”.

    We’ve been renovating our house and one of the areas affected was the basement. In the new scheme some of the walls are red. One day while walking our dog Jackson it occurred to me that I might need some pictures with read accents to go on the basement walls. So out of curiosity I started looking for red things. I was surprised how many I found during a short walk.
