Encounter in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

I came across these deer in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery the other day and they weren’t the only ones. As I continued walking I kept bumping into small groups of deer. There weren’t many people or cars around so the deer felt brave enough to wander around. Also the snow had melted in patches so they had some grass to munch on.

On the Trail to Raven Rock – A hint of the past glory

Most of the trails at the Rockefeller State Park Preserve are on former carriage trails from when the Rockefeller family still owned the property. The park is very popular, particularly at the moment as people deal with COVID and you usually see lots of people. Sometimes you see people riding horses, but you don’t often see carriages. So this was an unexpected, and pleasant surprise.

I had visions of the Rockefeller family out for a ride in their carriages – without the masks of course.

My dog, Harley doesn’t quite know what to make of horses. He doesn’t see them often enough to form an opinion. He does know what deer are though and he knows that they are something to bark at, and if possible chase. I think he sees horses as big deer, so I have to be careful to keep him close and socially distanced from the horses lest he spook them.

A Shield Bug

Also known as a stink bug, presumably because of the bad smell they produce if you crush one. I actually find them quite hard to crush, they’re so well armored. And the odd one that I seen crushed didn’t seem to have a bad smell at all. Mind you I have a notoriously bad sense of smell.

This one was wandering around in our kitchen sink. Well maybe wandering is too strong a word. It would actually move an inch or two and then stand still for a long period of time.

Since it wasn’t moving much this seemed to be a good opportunity to bring out the macro lens. My first few attempts were terrible: blurry, out of focus, badly exposed. Then it occurred to me to try using the small built in flash on the A6000. This resulted in the shot above. I thought the flash would be very constrasty, but I guess the light bounced off the white side walls of the sink and to me produced a pleasing result.
