Croton Point Park

Last Thanksgiving I took the dog for a walk at Croton Point Park, NY. The weather was great, and the light was superb. Above: Rocks and a tree (with roots) looking vaguely North over Verplanck. You can just make out the Bear Mountain Bridge in the background, and behind that the Schunemunk Mountain State Park (I think).

Rocks in the Hudson. Looking vaguely south towards Hook Mountain.

I love the symmetry of this tree.

Geese at sundown. Looking towards Croton Landing (I think).

Another tree.

An Unpleasant Surprise

We have a large metal chest on our dock. We keep garden furniture cushions, old fishing tackle left behind by the previous owners etc. in it.

The other day I went to get some cushions out of it and this is what I found.

You’ve got to admire the precision with which they build these nests. Luckily we wasps weren’t in a bad mood and didn’t pursue me.

Taken with an iphone SE (second generation).

A Praying Mantis

The other day I was talking to Eirah about the time when we lived on Long Island and how we used to see lots of praying mantises. Since we moved to the Hudson Valley we haven’t seen any. Yesterday we were walking through a mini mall in Peekskill and what should we come across…the pictures don’t do it justice. It was easily 4-5 inches long.

Taken with an Apple iPhone. I don’t remember which model.
