A Day in Beacon – Flea Market. An old doll.

I always find old dolls a little “spooky”. I’ve read (See for example: Uncanny valley: why we find human-like robots and dolls so creepy that human beings feel very uncomfortable looking at something which looks human, but isn’t. Apparently that’s why we find humanoid robots, clowns, apes rather difficult. Perhaps this is true of dolls too.

A Day in Beacon – Flea Market. Approaching the Flea Market

After parking the car I noticed this wonderful vehicle parked almost opposite the Flea Market entrance. It’s a Morgan 3 and according to Wikipedia:

The Morgan Motor Company announced that they would launch the 3 Wheeler in 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show. The 3 Wheeler was initially said to have a Harley-Davidson Screaming Eagle V-twin engine and a Mazda 5-speed manual transmission, and was estimated to deliver 115 horsepower (86 kW) at the rear wheel. However, there was a surprise when the prototype that was shown at Geneva had an S&S engine. Production three-wheelers turned out to have S&S engines. The kerb weight was originally estimated to be less than 500 kilograms (1,102 lb), but the final weight was tested at 550 kg (1,212 lb). The acceleration from zero to 60 mph (97 km/h) was estimated by Morgan as 4.5 seconds, with an (estimated) top speed of 115 mph (185 km/h). The three-wheeler is to be homologated as a motorcycle in the United States. The company states that 850 deposits have been taken since the announcement in 2011. Customer deliveries began in Europe in February 2012. USA deliveries are not expected before June 2012, when the first imported three-wheeler was displayed in New York City and at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance. The Morgan 3 Wheeler was featured in a Series 18 episode of UK motoring show Top Gear where presenter Richard Hammond picked the Morgan 3 Wheeler in a comparison of track-day cars. The 3 Wheeler won the “Not-A-Car of the Year 2011” in Top Gear.

A Day in Beacon – Overview

We’d decided to spend a day in Beacon, NY with our friends. The plan was to go fairly early and take in the flea market. Then we’d take a look along Main Street and find somewhere to have lunch. After that we’d proceed to the highlight of the day: a boat trip to Bannerman Island followed by a tour. We hadn’t planned for anything after that, but as our boat arrived back in Beacon we noticed that something was going on along the waterfront. It turned out that it was a Strawberry Festival, so we decided to go there too.

Above Mount Beacon, apparently the highest peak in the Hudson Highlands. I’ve already posted about Mount Beacon.

New Portfolio – Landscapes

I’ve recently added a new portfolio: Landscapes. This one was much harder than the first three: Street; Portraits; and Abstract. The thing is that I don’t do a lot of street photography. Nor do I produce a lot of portraits. The same can be said of abstracts. So I didn’t have to go through too many pictures to find a few that I liked.

However, I live in the Hudson Valley and a lot of my pictures are landscapes taken while walking around – usually with the dog. So I had a lot to go through. I managed to find a few that I liked, but I was surprised to find how many I didn’t like. I don’t think I’ve invested enough time in landscape photography. Perhaps an investment in a new lens(ses) is in order? I’m thinking of a wide angle zoom. Also I think I have to take a tripod with me more often. I’ll also have to try to overcome my laziness and get up early in the morning to get better light.

We’ll see if anything improves.
