In this shot we’re inside the “Temple of Virtue” at the New Windsor Cantonement with another extremely friendly and knowledgeable guide who explained to us the history behind this building. She also suggested that we might want to look at the Revolutionary War period surgical kit and then explained all about it.

In addition to giving a very thorough presentation on the New Windsor Cantonment our knowledgeable and versatile guide also provided a musketry demonstration as well as showing his prowess as a blacksmith. Specifically he explained/demonstrated how to make a nail.

Imagine being operated on by someone using this. No anesthetic; no antibiotics; and I don’t suppose that the implements were kept particularly clean. No wonder about twice as many people died from infection/disease than were killed on the battlefield. You really didn’t want to be wounded in those days.

Musketry demonstration at New Windsor Cantonment. To the rear a reconstruction of the “Temple of Virtue” where George Washington is reputed to have made one of his most impassioned speeches. He was speaking to his officers who were inclined to march on Congress to take, by force, the back pay owed to them. He was apparently able to persuade them not to.
