In our garden – Orchid Romance

One of my wife’s new roses. This one was selected as one of the top 10 best roses by Birds and Blooms:

This 2011 shrub rose from the breeders of Knock Out combines sumptuous antique blossoms with modern disease resistance and an ever-blooming habit. The initial burst of color softens to a paler pink.

Why we love it: Old-fashioned beauty, delightful citrusy fragrance, easy to grow—this newcomer is a winner.

In our garden – tulips

This is the first of a series of posts taken early in May, 2018. My wife planted these tulips last year.

We haven’t had tulips for a while. Many years ago, not long after we bought our house in Briarcliff Manor my wife planted a large number of them. They all came up the following year, the buds formed and we were looking forward to seeing them flower. The next day we came out to find a sea of stalks – no flowers, no buds. The deer had gotten the lot! As a result of this experience we fenced off the entire property. We haven’t had a problem with deer since.

This, however, is a different house and it’s not fenced, so instead we have a motion activated sprinkler, which also seems to do a decent job – as long as we remember to keep it turned on. Unfortunately, we tend to leave it off a lot of the time as tends to “sprinkle” us if we leave it on.

Rockefeller Preserve, Brook Trail – A Field of Bright Green Skunk Cabbage

Or at least that’s what I think it is.

Somehow I never see the the flowers, which come out early in Spring and then disappear leaving only these bright green leaves – quite attractive themselves when massed as in this picture.

According to the National Wildlife Federation:

The skunk cabbage gets its name from the unpleasant odor it emits. This scent is a way for the plant to attract pollinators that are attracted to rotting meat. The scent is especially noticeable when the plant is injured. It travels easily because it is carried on the warm air that constantly rises from the spathe.

I’ve never noticed the smell. This could be because I don’t go during the period where the smell is noticeable or it could be because I have a truly terrible sense smell.
