As I recall this was taken in a “pocket” park somewhere on Second Avenue in New York City with a Sony NEX 5N and Sigma E 30mm (45mm equivalent) f2.8. I tend to shy away from pictures of people I don’t know (and even people I DO know for that matter). However, at the time I took this I was trying to convince myself that I could take “street” photographs. Some of them were OK, but I never became comfortable and so after a short time gave up on street photography and returned to my usual subjects. No point in pursuing something I don’t enjoy all that much.
Street Vendors in New York City
I don’t remember much about this picture other than that it was taken somewhere in New York City (along 42nd street I think) in May 2012. I think they were selling posters of some kind. I liked the animated expression of the woman on the right (her eyes almost seem to twinkle) and the concentration of the woman in the left as she speaks to someone on her phone.

Nikon 85mm f2 Nikkor
I have this lens on loan from a friend who discovered that he had an old Nikon N2000/F201 with two lenses: a 50mm f1.8 E-series and this one. I’ve been using it on my NEX 5N.
Some pictures taken with it can be found here:
Silver Balls.
Bird in Flight.
Blue and White.
Red Cinnabar Jar.
For a lens of this focal length it’s extremely small and fairly light weighing about 11oz. Five elements in five groups and a diaphragm with seven blades and a minimum aperture of f22. The lens focuses to about 2.8 feet and fits 52mm filters.
I’ve read that the faster 85mm Nikkors are better optically. I’ve never tried one so I can’t say, but this one seems fairly sharp to me. It feels solid and comfortable to me and while I’m fond of selective focus I can’t say that I’m a bokeh afficionado. Again I like what I’m getting. I’ve noticed a little chromatic aberration, but nothing too serious.
An excellent small, fast, compact, easy to carry around lens with great image and build quality.
Silver Balls
I’d seen these many times. They’ve been hanging from this post for months and somehow they have not lost their lustre. It was a nice sunny day and and they were shining brightly when I decided to capture them in all their glory. As I was taking the picture I noticed that they were not quite as perfect as I thought: the piece projecting downward (I don’t know what it’s called) from the bottom is missing from the ball on the left.

Bird in Flight
I was walking around in the neighborhood when I came across this bird feeder in someone’s garden. A cloud of small birds surrounded it with two or three of them at any time taking turns to come and feed. Unfortunately it was some distance away and I didn’t have a long enough lens with me. I took some pictures anyway just to see what I’d get.
I liked this one the most, but because of the bird’s motion and my unsteady hands it’s rather soft and blurry. To make matters worse I had to crop fairly drastically to get it to fill the frame. So it didn’t have a lot going for it. Still I found the bird’s motion to be appealing and decided to do some more extreme post-processing than is usual for me. First I removed a second bird in the left part of the frame. It was badly blurred and quite distracting. Then to emphasize the motion I applied a zoom blur filter from Analog Effects 2. Finally I converted to black and white since the rather muted colors didn’t seem to add much.
I remember once reading something along the lines of: in a landscape either get the horizon straight or tilt it enough to show that you meant it to be tilted. I applied similar thinking to this picture. If it was going to be soft and blurry then I might as well exaggerate that. People might even think that it was deliberate. I actually quite like the result.
