Still Life

We were recently invited over to some friends for drinks and appetizers. Their house has a nice outdoor area with a fishpond overlooking one of the coves on our lake. I was sitting there talking to some people when I noticed this vase of flowers sitting on a ledge. Something about it caught my eye. Maybe it was the pastel colors of the flowers combined with the grey of the ledge and the rose colored stucco behind? Maybe it was the way the vase and the flowers contrasted with the rough stucco behind? I know that I liked it and couldn’t wait for the conversation to end so that I could get a picture.

An Apple a Day….

We recently had some guests over to our house. My wife wanted me to take some wide shots of our patio so I pulled out an old Quantaray 24mm f2.8 to use with my Sony DSLR. After I finished I put the camera and lens on a table next to my computer. I didn’t know much about this lens so I was browsing the internet looking for additional information when I discovered that it was supposed to have a fairly decent macro capability. In front of me on the table was a bowl of apples so I thought I’d give it a try. This is the result.

Root

I was out walking with some friends when one of them, knowing of my interest in photography, brought me this interesting looking root. It was essentially all browns so I thought it would look quite ‘muddy’ in color and that a black and white conversion would be in order. I like the contrasts between the lights and the darks and the textures are interesting. I needed a fairly plain background, so I put it on the seat of a nearby chair.

Still life with toes

Incredible though it may seem for someone living in Putnam County, NY this offering at the base of a statue was seen at a nearby Buddhist Monastery. What caught my attention was the contrast between the essentially monochromatic statue and the bright colors of the fruit; and the contrast between the smoothness of the fruit an the rough texture of the statue.

Silver Balls

I’d seen these many times. They’ve been hanging from this post for months and somehow they have not lost their lustre. It was a nice sunny day and and they were shining brightly when I decided to capture them in all their glory. As I was taking the picture I noticed that they were not quite as perfect as I thought: the piece projecting downward (I don’t know what it’s called) from the bottom is missing from the ball on the left.
