Sunnyside – Washington Irving’s home in Irvington, NY

Another stop on the itinerary for our visiting friends was Sunnyside, the home of Washington Irving – probably the first American author of international renown. We’d had lunch at Harvest on Hudson in Hastings on Hudson and a friend dropped us off. We were very lucky that the wisteria that grows all over the front facade of house was in full bloom. We also did the house tour, given by an extremely knowledgeable guide in period costume (unfortunately no interior photography allowed). After we’d finished we continued along the Old Croton Aqueduct trail, this time going north past Lindhurst (unfortunately too late for the tour) into Tarrytown where we sat and had a drink at Mint on Main Street.

Turtle Fishing?

We took our visiting friends to Kobu – a nice asian fusion restaurant on the lake in Mahopac, NY. They’ve recently added a pleasant covered patio area right next to the lake. After we’d finished eating we noticed a flurry of activity down by the lake so we went over to “check it out”. A number of the serving staff (this is one) were down by the lake with fishing nets trying to catch something – it turns out that it was a turtle. They were unsuccessful, but I shudder to think what they would have done with it had they caught it: anyone for turtle chow mein?

Goat Portrait

We had visitors from the UK: old friends from university days who I hadn’t seen for over 20 years. The had said that they liked to walk so I took them on a selection of walks in the Hudson Valley. On one of the walks we went down the Old Croton Aqueduct trail to Rockwood Hall.

An area had been fenced off and a sign indicated that they are using goats and sheep to control invasive plant species and sure enough inside the enclosure were a number of goats. Either out of curiosity or because they thought we had food the entire group ambled over towards us. This particular one put his legs up on the wall surrounding our end of the enclosure thus giving me the opportunity to take this shot.
