A Walk around Tarrytown – A twisted shrub

I came across this interestingly shaped shrub/bush in front of another of Tarrytown’s restaurants: Sweet Grass Grill, which describes itself as follows:

Sweet Grass Grill is a casual restaurant serving local and seasonal food right in the heart of Tarrytown. With relationships with about a dozen local farms, the menu varies week to week depending on the daily harvests. Expect seasonal soups and salads and a changing roster of entrees. The bar is carved out of a single fallen oak tree from the Rockefeller Preserves and features a great cocktail menu, microbrews and many wines by the glass.

I’ve been there a few times, but not recently. As I recall the food was good.

Queen Anne’s Lace

I liked the look of this. It was helpful that it had a nice uncluttered background, actually snow on a frozen pond. Initially I had no idea what it was until a friend told me that it looked like “a dead wild carrot”. Then another friend chimed in with “It looks like Queen Anne’s’ Lace that was about to bloom when it was interrupted by cold weather”. After a bit of research I discovered that “wild carrot” and “Queen Anne’s Lace” are in fact the same thing. I’m going with “Queen Anne’s Lace” because it sounds so much better.

A touch of brightness in an otherwise dull landscape

These and a few brightly colored berries and seeds and the only things adding color to the Winter landscape. I always wondered what they were and couldn’t understand why people would want brightly colored cabbages in their non-vegetable gardens. After some ‘googling’ I discovered that they are ornamental (or flowering) cabbage . Apparently there are a number of varieties. Who knew?
