On the Beach

We don’t normally have a beach at the bottom of our property.

The level of our lake is lowered every winter, usually by about three feet I believe. Apparently this is done to control the growth of aquatic weeds in the shallow water – the freezing winter temperatures freeze the roots and kill the weeds. It also allows residents to do repairs to their docks. This lowering or “draw down” as it’s called is controversial because it means that for some residents their lovely water view becomes a mud flat during winter. It doesn’t affect us much as our house is high and we still see the water as normal. From the dock you notice that the lake level has gone down though.

This year, however, a very old valve needs to be replaced and to get to it the lake level has been lowered about seven feet. This has made a big difference. From the house we still see water, but now there’s a strip of beach (you can’t see it from the house) between us and the water. The steps from of dock, which used to got down to the water now open onto the beach.

This is really quite interesting (particularly since it doesn’t affect our view). We can now take the dog for short walks along the beach. He loves it.

I decided to give the Sony Alpha 500 another go. I like the feel of the camera.  I like the weight in my hands (but not to carry around) and I appreciate having the buttons ready to hand rather than having to hunt around in menus as I have to on the Nex.  But I’m not wild about the lens I’m using with it. It’s the old Konica Minolta AF DT 18-70mm f3.5-5.6 that came as the kit lens with my Maxxum 5D.

Barring unforeseen circumstances the work on the valve should be finished this week.  Hopefully they will then raise the lake level again – at least to its normal winter level.  I’ll miss the beach though.

Saint Martin, Saint Barthelemy and Anguilla 2009

In 2009 we had a great holiday in the Caribbean. We stayed in St. Martin: a very interesting island. Although it’s only 87 square kilometers it’s half Dutch and half French. The airport is in the Dutch part and the cruise ships also dock here. If you like to party it seems the Dutch part is for you. Preferring a more sedate life we stayed in the French part with it’s lovely restaurants right on the water. Our hotel was in Anse Marcel. The road winds up over a steep hill (intimidating to my wife as she was driving at the time). You eventually get to a bay with just two (at least at that time there were only two) hotels. Quite secluded. We also visited Anguilla (by catamaran) and St. Barth’s (by motor boat from Marigot so we didn’t have to risk the scary short runway right into the sea that you have to use if you come by air).

Sony Alpha 500

Ken

In an earlier post I noted that my first digital SLR was a Konica Minolta Maxxum 5d.  I bought this camera because:

a) I’d had a good experience with a minolta camera in the past. My first serious camera was a Minolta Hi-Matic 7sii. By that time I’d had film SLRs, but when I went to digital I started with a Canon
s10 followed by a Canon s50 – both of them compact cameras.

b) The Maxxum 5d was a good buy because at that time Konica Minolta was getting out of the camera business. When I bought the camera I didn’t know that Sony would be picking up the Konica Minolta camera business.

As I mentioned in the earlier post I didn’t really give the Maxxum a chance and after a while i decided that what I needed was a better camera with more megapixels (I was a lot more naive in those days). I had lenses in the Maxxum mount so the logical choice was Sony. I found a good buy on the Alpha 500 and so I got it. However, I think I was souring on SLRs by that time so I didn’t use it that much. I lost interest in photography at that time and my enthusiasm was not rekindled until I lost the Canon Powershot S50 and bought a Panasonic Lumix LX-3 to replace it.

My interest in SLRs (both film and digital) has recently increased and the other day I bought two Maxxum lenses for a grand total of $26. When they come I’ll try them out on the Alpha 500.
