Red Door

This was taken at Teatown Lake Reservation. I liked the wood textures and the bright red of the door. I also liked the way that the small window to the upper left reflected the bright blue of the sky and the way it contrasted with the red of the door. I would have preferred not to have had the dark, distracting shadows, but c’est la vie.

Reflections in a torn curtain – two versions

The window is in a sugar house in a nearby park. I was attracted by the textures and contrasts e.g. white curtain/black interior as well as the way the trees are reflected in the glass and are seen through the tear in the curtain.

One version is somewhat broader than the other. I like them both, but I’m not sure which one I prefer. The first version provides more context so that you can see what you are looking at. The second is more abstract in nature. By removing the window frame it’s not so readily apparent that this is a window. You have to think a bit more about what you’re seeing.

Lomography

lomography-1

I’ve always had mixed feelings about Lomography. On the one hand I find their photographic equipment (cameras and the like) to be overpriced and over-hyped for what it is. On the other hand I applaud their efforts to spread the gospel on the merits and joys of film photography. They’ve done a fantastic job and if film continues they will have done much to contribute to its survival.

I do like their web site though. I find it to be attractively presented, easy to navigate and with lots of interesting and useful information. Not to mention tons of pictures, many in the classic Lomography mode (i.e. light leaks, vignettes and the like), many of which are well worth a second look. From the extract below it seems that they revamped their web site in 2014. Congratulations to whoever did it.

For the last year we’ve been working on the next version of Lomography. We based our work on the feedback you’ve given us over the years and we wanted to share it as early as possible with you and can’t wait to hear what you think. Just one warning first: it is still in development and things can break. All the photos, comments, likes, homes and everything else were transferred as of October 16th, 2014. So anything you do on next.lomography.com won’t be reflected on www.lomography.com and vice versa. Once we are done with testing, everything you did here will be deleted again. So this is a big playground for you to explore.

Old Tree

I’ve been taking pictures of this tree for ages. It’s on the site of a long-gone mansion so I’m sure it’s something exotic. I like the way the branches curl around. It’s almost as if it’s some kind of animal – maybe like the Ents in “Lord of the Rings”. The pictures never seem to come out the way that I hope they will, so I keep trying. This one was taken late in the afternoon in April and the sun was low and shining in from an angle. So I thought this one might be a little better, and I do prefer it to the others I’ve taken.
