Red Anthurium

I was sitting at our breakfast table when this plant caught my eye. A friend of ours had given it to us as a Christmas present. It has green leaves, and red waxy flowers with a projecting bit in the middle that’s a lighter color of green. Although it’s quite colorful for some strange reason I thought it would work well in black and white. At first I thought that I’d use an old Canon f1.4 lens in Leica Threadmount, but then I realized that it doesn’t focus very close. Then I thought of an old Canon FD 100mm f4 macro lens that I’d bought some time ago and had only used once to test it (see Weekly picks – 11/12/2012), dusted it off and gave it another try.

Incidentally I just ‘googled’ the flower and discovered that it’s called an Anthurium.

2015 Favorites – Color

2015 Favorites – Black and White

Lightbeams.

Another year has passed and it’s time to post some of my favorite pictures from 2015 – starting with some black and whites. Like last year I’m presenting my ten favorites – in no particular order.

I’ve been trying to find a focus for my photography, which at the moment is all over the place. I had thought that my primary interest was in old buildings. However, in looking at my favorites I was surprised to discover that none of them (black and white or color) contain old buildings. While I’ve taken lots of pictures of old buildings over the year it seems that I don’t consider any of them to be favorites. Just for curiosity I looked back at 2014 favorites and found that the same was true in 2014: pretty much no buildings. Go figure!

Last year I provided descriptions of each of the images. This year I provide only captions. All of the images appear in posts throughout the year and you can find the longer descriptions there.

December Flowers

Apart from the odd poinsettia I didn’t think I’d be taking flower pictures at this time of year. I bumped into a neighbour the other day and she remarked that she’d seen some white flowers in a garden along Lake Shore Road. Sure enough, when I looked I came across several clumps of these flowers. I have no idea what they are. I also noticed that there were buds on a magnolia, and in several places shoots were starting to emerge. Friends staying in our other house tell me that dandelions are starting to emerge. The abnormally high temperatures we’ve had recently (and continue to have) seem to have convinced the flora that Spring is here! How I wish that were true.
